place
A private house of historical importance. Situated between Salisbury and the New Forest. Commanding a hill top position with views over the ancient Salisbury water meadows.
Brief
The creation of a new garden and to simplifying the existing garden layout as a whole. To program discrete new parking and paths for visitors. To future plan for the immediate 40 acre parkland. Working to a very tight budget.
Design
A new plan for the park revealed old views and created new vistas. Important tree groupings where traced on historical maps the bones of which remain after decades of neglect. Most of the new trees were grow from seed. A management plan of successional planting now ensures the future of the listed parkland for years to come.
Two new 30ft herbaceous boarders were created directly by the house, to be appreciated year round from the garden. These boarders are unseen from the house so the view of the park remains undisturbed and pastoral. To this end our approach was to judiciously edit the gardens after layers of additions by different owners. Simplification of existing formal gardens, orchard and pool garden. Major alterations to the landscape include a new entrance and approaching drive. A decision that has tied the park and vistas back together again.
